Jayanti is a small village which is situated along the Jayanti River in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal State of India. It is located within the popular Buxa Tiger Reserve which is among the most visited destinations in Dooars. The names of Jayanti Hills at the eastern side and Jayanti Village at the western side of the river name have been derived from the Jayanti River itself.
The river forms a natural border with the hills of Bhutan which is also a pictorial excellence which seems to be created carefully by the Almighty himself. If Darjeeling is the “Queen of Hills”, then Jayanti is definitely the “Queen of Dooars” for the appealing natural beauty.
The place which derives its name from Chilla Rai – the army chief of the Coch Rajas, was famous as the hunting ground of Coch Rajas. Dense forest with only narrow paths makes the place thrilling for tourists and wildlife lovers. The entry permit is to be obtained from Chilapata Range office which can be reached going through Mathurapur Tea Garden.
Forest safari is conducted two times a day.Timings – Morning(6am – 8:30am) , Afternoon(2:30pm – 5pm).
Torsa, being the main river, other rivers like Kalchini, Buriasra and Beniya also flows through the dense forest, where you may catch a glimpse of rhino, elephants and Gaurs. Enjoy the jungle safari and the ancient fort of the Nalrajas which dates back to 5th century. The forest also houses the famous Ramguwa tree. Due to red colour of the sap, the locals say, that the tree bleeds if hit. Unfortunately these trees are decreasing in number due to smuggling. The forest is inhabited by the Rava tribes and offers more thrill and the jungle flavor compared its other counterparts in Dooars. Coochbehar is the convenient accessible point for visiting Chilapata.
How to Reach
Nearest railhead is Hasimara which is 18km from Chilapata and can be reached by train (13149 Kanchankanya Express) from Sealdah. Alpurduar is 22kms and Coochbehar is 40kms from Chilapata.
Once the capital of Coch Rajas, Coochbehar was established by Maharaja Bishwasingh Coch in the year 1522. Coochbehar was an independent state for more than 400 years before collaborating with India in 1949. The point of tourist attraction being the Coochbehar Palace, situated at heart of the city with an area of 55 sq.km. The palace was built by Maharaj Nripendranarayan in Gothic style and resembles St. Peters Palace of Rome. Presently the palace is under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India.
Coochbehar was known as the city of lakes in the past as it has 8 lakes , viz., Sagardighi, Bairagidighi being the popular among them. Coochbear was known as the city of lakes in the past. It has 8 lakes, among which Sagardighi and Bairagidighi are most popular.
The famous Madanmohan Temple is also located here. Visit Purani Masjid, Dispen Church located in the city and thereafter Madhupurdham located 10km from the city. After that you can also visit Mashanbaba Temple near Dinhata which is situated further 17kms . On the way to Alipuduar, you can also trek down to Baneshwar Shiv Temple which rests in a cave below. Kamteshwari Temple, which was built by Maharaja Pran Narayan, is another religious spot situated 32km from the city.
Suggested Itinerary For You
DAY 1 :- Reach Hasimara by train/car from Kolkata. Driving through the forest road among the greenery we will reach Chilapata. After lunch we will visit Mathurapur Tea Estate, banks of Baniya river and other nearby places. Enjoy the evening with snacks and watching tribal dance by the Ravas. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2 :- Go for a thrilling safari at Chilapata forest. After breakfast we will bid adieu to Chilapata and driving through Rajabhatkhawawe will reach Buxa Tiger Reserve. After lunch we will spend some time on the banks of Jayanti river. Once a busy town, Jayantiwas used as a railhead by the British for transporting Dolomite by rail from the hills in Bhutan. After the railway lines being washed away by the floods, and as the years passed, Jayanti lost its importance as a town and is only a small village now. You can also enjoy trekking to the Mahakal cave or take a safari to Pokhri. Dinner and overnight stay at Jayanti.
DAY 3 :- After breakfast we will drive to Santalebari and trek to the ancient Buxa Fort. Here you can enjoy the adventurous trek and also the natural sceneries Lunch at a village inside the Buxa Fort and return to Jayanti by evening. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 4 :- After breakfast we will start towards Coochbehar, which was once the capital of Cooch Rajas. The point of tourist attraction being the Coochbehar Palace, situated at heart of the city with an area of 55 sq.km. The palace was built by Maharaj Nripendranarayan in Gothic style and resembles St. Peters Palace of Rome. The palace is open to the tourists from 10am to 5pm except Friday . The museum houses historic weapons, royal clothes and artistic oil paintings. Also the large garden and the array of colorful flowers add to the beauty of the palace. After lunch we will go for sight seeing in Coochbehar. Dinner and overnight stay at Coochbehar.
DAY 5 :- After breakfast we will visit an off beat place Rasomati, situated 22km from Coochbeharunder Patlakhola Range. The wildlife and the beauty of the Torsa river flowing down makes the place more pleasant. Next we will visit Rasikbil, a large natural lake with an area of 175 hectares situated 45km from Coochbehar and the forests surrounding it over an area of 800 hectares. After lunch, drop at New Alipurduar.
Visit Jayanti during the monsoon
Since throughout the year the River remains dry and it is only in the monsoon that the charming sound of the flowing river can be witnessed. The water level rises during the monsoon and the white pebbles make the river bed looks like wearing a white carpet.

The closest railway station from Jayanti is in New Alipurduar. The distance between Alipurduar Railway station to Jayanti is 30 Km and the closest airport from Jayanti is Baghdogra.The distance between Baghdogra to Jayanti is 198 Km.Visitors can easily hire taxi from the respective junctions.

Buxa Fort is a historical place, now in ruins. It was formerly dominated by Bhutan King but was handed over to the British in the later period of time. British used the fort as a prison for holding the rebels of entire India.
